She was found on the forest floor in the Lapa Rios Reserve when she was less than two days old.
Quick action by one of the lodge’s guides saved Winkie’s life. The guide heard the commotion of the mother and other monkeys in the trees close by and ran to the area to find a troop of coatis closing in to attack. Seconds later Winkie would have been food for the omnivores.

Today Winkie is developing much more rapidly than Poppy or Sweetie, possibly because her two older “sisters” are here to teach her. She is very independent going out in the trees to forage while swinging from limb to limb.
She is the epitome of good health, using many intrinsic behaviors during her daily activities and we see no reason why she won’t return to the forest when she is sexually mature in four to seven years.

The flock is Growing

Two Chicks fledged into the wild this year. The proud parents, Ramona and April-you remember the two that nested in our bathroom and evicted us from our house-they produced one egg and hatched “Silvi”-we named her in honor of our project veterinarian, Dr. Silvia Coto.

We would sit below in the dining room and listen to her progress. We were beginning to believe she would never leave the “nest” and had casual thoughts of taking her to the third floor and tossing her to the wind. She must have heard of our intentions and fledged the next day.

Ramona has absolutely nothing to do with her, but her proud father still supplements her feeding and preens her new feathers.

“Nicuesa” fledged from a tree further down the coast at Playa Nicuesa Lodge. This verifies the flock is flying its natural boundaries of about 9 kilometers from the sanctuary.

We have a slight dilemma with her; the flight feathers on one wing are longer than the others. When she fledged, she flew in circles and flew like a rock to the ground.

We plan to trim the longer feathers to match the others and throw her to the wind.

We will keep you informed of her progress in future newsletters.
